Our 2nd grade year has begun! We will spend the first 2 weeks getting to know everyone and learning our procedures and routines. I’m excited to be working with you and your sweet children! Thank you to all the parents who came to Open House.
- Lunch Applications – Please be sure you complete a NEW free and reduced lunch application by September 9th. These updated applications are needed yearly.
- Recess - As the temperatures begin to warm up, please be sure to have your child brings a water bottle to school for recess. Also be sure your child is wearing safe shoes to school (no flip flops) and no spaghetti straps.
- Snacks – Please be sure you child packs a healthy snack every day.
- DOT Folder – Please be sure your child is bringing their DOT folder every day to school. There is important information contained in the DOT folders such as homework, homework resources and information regarding the PTA or any other events going on in the school.
- DOJO - This will be our main form of communication. Please be sure you are speaking to your child about their behavior and let me know if I can help in any way to ensure success.
- Homework – Students will receive homework on Mondays which should be turned in on Friday. We will not begin homework until the 2nd week of school. Students should be practicing their fluency passages every night. It is their goal to read 52 words a minute beginning of the year and 87 words a minute by the end of the year. There will also be a weekly math sheet included in homework.
- Special Rotation – We are on a 6 day Specials rotation. We will be offering PE, Spanish, Technology, Media/Boost, Art and Music.
- Room Parent - We are looking for a room parent for our classroom. Please let me know if you have extra time to spare to support your child’s classroom. You must be cleared through Wake County and be a PTA member. You will assist with any classroom celebrations and getting the word out to parents about school events that are being held.
- Volunteers and Chaperones – We are still finalizing our field trips this year but if you would like to be a chaperone, please make sure you are cleared through Wake County. This process can take some time so please do it as soon as possible.
- Earbuds: Please bring in earbuds for your child along with their name on it (use a piece of tape to write their name). We will be using the earbuds for listen to reading with our computers during literacy centers.
What we are learning…
Reading and Writing:
This month we will be reviewing procedures and routines along with building a collaborative work environment. In the 3rd week of school we will begin our Unit on Schools and Community. We will be asking and answering questions about the text we read. We will also respond to how characters are feeling at different parts of the text. We will also identify the central message along with using illustrations to help us understand text.
Math:
In math, we are representing whole numbers up to 20 and determine with a group of objects if it is odd or even. We will also determine addition and subtraction using fluency with mental strategies. Last we will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 100.

We are talking about rules and procedures in the school.
