Our 2nd grade year has begun! We will spend the first 2 weeks getting to know everyone and learning our procedures and routines. I’m excited to be working with you and your sweet children! Thank you to all the parents who came to Open House.
- Recess - As the temperatures begin to warm up, please be sure to have your child brings a water bottle to school for recess. Also be sure your child is wearing safe shoes to school (no flip flops) and no spaghetti straps.
- Snacks – Please be sure you child packs a healthy snack every day. We have lunch at 12:15PM and then children have snack at 1:30PM during recess.
- DOT Folder – Please be sure your child is bringing their DOT folder every day to school. This is the way I communicate with behavior and work done in class. I encourage you to discuss behavior and work in the classroom with your child.
- Homework – Students will receive homework on Mondays which should be turned in on Friday. Students should be practicing their fluency passages every night. It is their goal to read 52 words a minute beginning of the year and 87 words a minute by the end of the year. There will also be a weekly math sheet included in homework.
- Special Rotation – We are on a 5 day Specials rotation. Spanish is our new special this year and we are excited to offer this to students.
- Room Parent - We are looking for a room parent for our classroom. Please let me know if you have extra time to spare to support your child’s classroom. You must be cleared through Wake County and be a PTA member. You will assist with any classroom celebrations and getting the word out to parents about school events that are being held.
- Volunteers and Chaperones – We are still finalizing our field trips this year but if you would like to be a chaperone, please make sure you are cleared through Wake County. This process can take some time so please do it as soon as possible.
- Earbuds: Please bring in earbuds for your child along with their name on it (use a piece of tape to write their name). We will be using the earbuds for listen to reading with our computers in the next week.
- DOJO - This will be our main form of communication. Please be sure you are speaking to your child about their behavior and let me know if I an help in anyway to ensure success.
- White t-shirt - Please have your child bring in a white t-shirt so that I may tie dye their shirt for field trips.
What we are learning…
Reading and Writing:
This month we will be reviewing procedures and routines along with STEM activities to build a collaborative work environment. We will also be asking and answering questions about the text we read. We will also respond to how characters are feeling at different parts of the text. We will also identify the central message along with using illustrations to help us understand text.
Math:
In math, we are representing whole numbers up to 20 and determine with a group of objects if it is odd or even. We will also determine addition and subtraction using fluency with mental strategies. Last we will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 100.
